Stay curious!
Daniel Diss,
The Curious Pastor
Growing up on a farm in south-central Illinois, I have always been curious about the natural world. I heard the call to ministry when I was young and followed that call into ministry. I have served congregations in Connecticut while in seminary, and in Illinois. Presently I'm the pastor at First United Methodist Church of Glen Ellyn. My background includes interests in the arts, the natural world and in particular how our natural world, faith, spirituality, and the arts all intersect.
What's It All About
Why Do You Do What You Do
As a young seminarian, I was training in hospital chaplaincy at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. I was making a call on a patient who turned to me and asked, "Why did you do it?" Taken aback I asked, "What do you mean?" "Why did you become a priest?" Being a Roman Catholic hospital, she assumed I was a Roman Catholic priest. I explained I wasn't but her question persisted. "Why did you do it?" That was in the Summer of 1988, before I was even ordained a deacon. I've been answering that question ever since.
The "Why Do You Do What You Do" Project is an answer to that question but instead of words, it uses images. I have taken 18 months to develop this photo-essay in response to the question. Over those months, I have developed what I believe is a repeatable process for spiritual growth and development which uses images, photographs, to answer the question, "Why do you do what you do?"
The project as it is composed is designed specifically for ministry professionals, clergy or lay. It is a twelve month project. If you'd like to know more, Follow this link. In the meantime, enjoy the "WDYDWYD" Photoessay entitled, "Calling"
